Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT? What to check

Why a Shopify store’s products don’t appear in ChatGPT shopping, in the order worth checking, with the setting or requirement behind each cause.

You asked ChatGPT for something you sell and got a competitor. Before changing anything, work out which of two problems you have:

  • Excluded. Your products never reach ChatGPT through Shopify. Nothing you do to your copy will help until this is fixed.
  • Included but not picked. ChatGPT has your products and chose others for that question. This is a ranking problem, and it’s mostly outside your control.

Most troubleshooting advice mixes the two up. The checks below go in order, from the causes you can fix in five minutes to the ones you can’t.

First: you don’t need to apply

OpenAI runs a merchant application at chatgpt.com/merchants. Shopify stores don’t need it. OpenAI’s own merchant page says: “If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required” (ChatGPT merchants). Shopify says the same: “You don’t need to do anything for your products to be discovered by ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog” (Selling on ChatGPT).

So if you’ve been waiting on an application, that isn’t the blocker.

Check 1: does your store meet ChatGPT’s own requirements?

Shopify lists four requirements for the ChatGPT channel:

  • You sell to US customers. “Your store must sell to customers in the United States, however, your store can be based outside the United States.”
  • Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog. More on that in check 3.
  • You’ve agreed to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
  • Three policies are filled in: Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy, under Settings > Policies.

The policies are the easiest one to overlook. A store that has never filled in its refund policy page fails this check even if every product is fine.

ChatGPT shopping itself is US-only for now: “Shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S.” (ChatGPT merchants). If you’re testing from outside the US, you may not see product results at all.

Check 2: is ChatGPT’s access switched on?

In your admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic. By default Allow Shopify to manage for me is on, and every channel can read your products. If someone turned it off, check two switches: the global Shopify Catalog access setting, and the one on the ChatGPT channel itself (Managing agentic storefronts).

If you just switched access back on, wait. Shopify says turning access off “can take up to 7 days” to take effect, and doesn’t give a time for the reverse.

Check 3: are the products in Shopify Catalog at all?

This is the biggest group of causes, and the most fixable. The store must be on the Starter plan or higher and out of private mode. Each product needs a title, an image, a price above zero, publishing to the online store (or Hydrogen or Headless), and it can’t be Unlisted or hidden from search engines (Shopify Catalog requirements).

We go through every requirement, and where to check it, in Shopify Catalog requirements: why products get left out.

Check 4: is the product the kind ChatGPT won’t show?

Two categories are filtered out even when everything else is right:

  • Products OpenAI prohibits. Shopify notes that products on OpenAI’s list of prohibited products and services “don’t display in ChatGPT product discovery results,” and points to OpenAI’s commerce policies.
  • B2B-only products. Agentic storefronts “support only direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales,” and products sold only through B2B catalogs, behind customer login, or behind a storefront password are excluded (Shopify Catalog and product discovery).

What isn’t the cause

Your robots.txt doesn’t decide this. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers “affects only open-web discoverability. It doesn’t stop your product data from being sent by Shopify Catalog to the agentic storefronts that you’ve activated” (Shopify Catalog and product discovery).

There is a crawler that matters for a different part of ChatGPT. OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear as web results in ChatGPT search answers, and OpenAI recommends allowing it (OpenAI crawlers). That’s about your site being cited as a source, not about your products appearing as shoppable results. Worth allowing, but not the fix for missing products.

A missing llms.txt isn’t the cause either. Shopify serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt for every store automatically, and says they’re “separate from Shopify Catalog” (Shopify Catalog and product discovery).

If you’re included but not picked

If every check above passes, your products are available to ChatGPT, and the question is ranking. Shopify is clear that inclusion “doesn’t guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer” (Shopify Catalog).

Two things are worth doing:

  1. Run the search preview. Sales channels > Agentic has a search tool. Type the query a shopper would use, and it shows which of your products rank in the catalog’s results, with a Listing quality meter for each. You can also click a channel name to preview how the query might display there. Shopify calls the preview “a directional signal, not an exact prediction,” because channels re-rank (Managing agentic storefronts).
  2. Fix what the listing quality meter measures. Description length, image count, verified reviews, complete variants with readable option names, and filled-in store policies. We cover these, and what ChatGPT says it weighs, in How AI shopping agents choose which products to show.

Be skeptical of anyone promising a ranking. OpenAI says product results “are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships” (Shopping with ChatGPT search), and nobody outside OpenAI knows the weights.

Once you do show up

Showing up is half of it. The other half is what ChatGPT is told about your product when it does. For Shopify stores, that comes from the catalog, and Shopify marks the catalog’s description, top features and selling points as fields its AI “generated or enriched” (What Shopify’s AI adds to your listings). In our study of 192 top-ranked products, 14% were described to AI agents with a claim that directly contradicts the brand on health, safety or what’s in it (how we checked).

Hearsay covers both halves. The free scan tells you how many of your products it found in Shopify’s AI catalog and checks 5 of them claim by claim. If none of your products are in the catalog, the app’s home screen lists what’s blocking each one.

You didn’t say that.
