Selling on ChatGPT with Shopify: how it works in 2026

Instant Checkout is gone. How Shopify stores sell through ChatGPT now, what it costs, the requirements, how to opt out, and where the sales show up.

If you searched for how to sell on ChatGPT and found articles about checking out inside the chat, fees on each order, or an enrollment toggle, they’re describing an earlier version. This post covers how it works for Shopify stores today, with sources, and what you need to do. That turns out to be very little.

What changed, briefly

  • September 29, 2025. OpenAI announced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, “powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, built with Stripe,” with Shopify merchants “coming soon” (OpenAI). Shopify announced its side the same day (Shopify news).
  • March 24, 2026. OpenAI changed course: “We’ve found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we’re allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery” (OpenAI).

OpenAI’s merchant page now puts it plainly: “We’re moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience in ChatGPT … purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps” (ChatGPT merchants).

How it works now

Shopify describes ChatGPT as “a discovery-focused referrer platform for customers to find your products” (Selling on ChatGPT). In practice:

  1. A shopper asks ChatGPT for a product.
  2. ChatGPT finds products through Shopify Catalog, among other sources, and shows the ones it picks.
  3. The shopper taps through and buys “on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web.”

Because the purchase happens in your own checkout, Shopify says “all your customizations, branding, selling strategies, and payment methods are supported.” There’s no separate ChatGPT checkout setting to manage.

What it costs

Nothing extra. Shopify: “There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees.” OpenAI: “There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT” (ChatGPT merchants).

If you’ve read about a per-order fee, that was part of the original Instant Checkout announcement, which said “merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases.”

Requirements

It’s on by default for eligible stores. To be eligible, Shopify lists:

  • You sell to customers in the United States. Your store can be based elsewhere.
  • Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog. See Shopify Catalog requirements.
  • You’ve agreed to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
  • Your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy are filled in under Settings > Policies.

You don’t apply through OpenAI. OpenAI says: “If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required.”

A few product-level rules also apply. Products on OpenAI’s prohibited list aren’t shown, B2B-only products aren’t supported, and Shopify asks you to keep “any relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters” of the product description. If your products still don’t appear, work through Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT?.

How to opt out

If you don’t want ChatGPT reading your products through Shopify (Selling on ChatGPT):

  1. Go to Sales channels > Agentic in your admin.
  2. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
  3. Click ChatGPT.
  4. Turn off Shopify Catalog access, then Save.

Two caveats from Shopify: it “can take up to 7 days” to take effect, and your products “might still be displayed or referenced by the AI channel through other external discovery and listing methods, such as web crawling and indexing.” Turning off ChatGPT doesn’t affect other channels, such as Shop.

Where ChatGPT sales show up

Orders from AI channels arrive in your admin “with channel or referrer attribution” (agentic storefronts). Sales channels > Agentic has per-channel reports for sales, orders, sessions and conversion (Managing agentic storefronts).

If you use ShopifyQL, ChatGPT appears as an agentic_referring_channel, “the AI agent or assistant that referred the session to your online store.” It doesn’t appear in agentic_sales_channel, which covers channels with a checkout inside the chat (ShopifyQL sales schema). That matches how the channel works: ChatGPT refers, your store sells.

What about ads in ChatGPT?

They exist, and they’re separate from product results. OpenAI started testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, for users on its Free and Go plans. It says “ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers” and are “clearly labeled as sponsored” (Ads in ChatGPT).

OpenAI also has a beta for ad campaigns built from product feeds. Products uploaded that way “will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations” (Create campaigns from product feeds). Buying ads doesn’t change your organic product results, and your Shopify products don’t need an ad feed to appear.

What’s actually worth doing

Since ChatGPT is on by default and costs nothing extra, the work is mostly housekeeping:

  • Fill in your three policies. It’s a requirement, and it’s one of the checks in Shopify’s listing-quality meter.
  • Check you’re in the catalog. Especially after a theme change, a migration or a bulk import.
  • Make your product data complete. OpenAI says it uses “structured metadata … (e.g., price, product description)” and may “generate simplified product titles and descriptions” from it (Shopping with ChatGPT search). We cover what the channels say they weigh in How AI shopping agents choose which products to show.
  • Check what ChatGPT is being told. The description, top features and selling points in Shopify Catalog are partly written by Shopify’s AI (What Shopify’s AI adds to your listings). If one says something your product isn’t, here’s how to trace and fix it.

That last check is what Hearsay is for. The free scan reads what Shopify’s catalog tells AI agents about 5 of your products and flags every claim that contradicts your copy or that you never made.

You didn’t say that.
